We are Springing Forward at BCLC!

Spring has sprung at BCLC! The weather is becoming warmer and the children are spending more time learning, playing and exploring outside. Our School Age Remote Learners are also back in the public schools full time so we will be moving back into our traditional after school program once again.  Despite the challenges we have faced this past year, the children have done an amazing job adapting to all of the changes, with the support of our incredible staff. We are all looking forward to getting back to our normal routines and schedules and being able to be altogether again.

Our Gardening and Nature Programs are well underway!

Thanks to a generous donation of seed pods from Stop & Shop, all of the children in all age groups have begun planting vegetables.  Each of the garden beds are gridded so the children can track their progress.

We will also be partnering with Kestrel Educational Adventures who will be bringing us a Nature Program Curriculum.  The theme of the program will center around birds and representatives from Kestrel will coming to BCLC every Wednesday throughout the Spring to assist our BCLC staff with this exciting new outdoor program!

Our Infants & Toddlers Love Exploring Outside!

As we move into the warmer months, the children will start to go outside and on walks as much as possible. We will integrate spring colors into our art projects, like green, yellow and pink. We will gather flowers, leaves and use them to paint and draw. We will also be reading many spring-themed books about spring weather and animals and sing many fun songs. We are so excited to dive into spring together!

Our 2021 Spring Appeal is Coming in May

Be on the lookout for our 2021 Spring Appeal, which will be mailed out to all of our supporters in May.  Since Covid-19 is still very much with us and we cannot hold any in person fundraising events until later this year, we must rely on our Spring and End of Year Appeals to help us raise the funds needed to sustain the progress that we have made since our re-opening on June 29, 2020.

Things are slowly starting to get back to pre-Covid times, but we still have extra costs due to safety restrictions that are still in place and will be for some time to come.  We hope that we can count on your support for this year's Spring Appeal.  If you would like to make a donation to our Spring Appeal now, please click on the "I Want to Support the 2021 Spring Appeal" button below.

We thank you in advance for your support!

Lots of Fun and Learning Going On in School Age

The students from Gordon College created St. Patrick Day bags for our older school age children.  Each bag contained a riddle, a Gordon College pencil, and homemade binoculars to find Leprechauns!  The children had a blast solving the riddles and hunting for Leprechauns!

Our Young School Age children read all things Dr. Seuss over the past few weeks.  Through these creative and fun books, the children embraced who they are, were taught to care for the planet, and were encouraged to try new and different things.

We love our Family Childcare Providers

Did you know that in addition to our 25,000 square foot facility at 550 Cabot Street, BCLC also oversees 10 licensed family childcare homes throughout the North Shore for families that prefer a smaller group setting for their children?  Well we do!

Pam Caldwell, who is our Director of Family Childcare and Transportation, oversees our family childcare providers to ensure that they have the support they need to successfully run their home based centers.  The caring and compassionate folks that operate these centers are valuable affiliates of BCLC and they offer families another excellent option for quality and affordable early education and childcare.

Employee Spotlight - Pam Caldwell

As we begin our 48th year at BCLC, we think it's only fitting that we feature an employee who has been with us for 36 of those 48 years!  Pam Caldwell has served as a valuable member of our BCLC team since February 1985. Initially beginning her career as an educator in our classrooms, Pam was eventually promoted to the role of Family Child Care Director and Director of Transportation.

Today, Pam oversees a growing network of ten Family Child Care homes located throughout our local North Shore and Cape Ann communities. Her duties include recruitment of providers, promotion and enrollment, implementing professional development initiatives, family engagement, provider supervision, along with support and mentorship of her providers.

Her responsibilities as our Transportation Director include ongoing vehicle maintenance oversight and coordinating RMV requirements, such as driver licensing, vehicle inspections, and insurance. More recently, Pam has also received her CDL in order to serve as a back-up driver for our big yellow bus; this is not an easy feat!

When you ask Pam what has kept her at BCLC for so long she will tell you that working with the children is what makes her job so rewarding. She said, "The children that I taught and cared for in the beginning of my career at BCLC are now the parents of the children that I am helping to care for now.  That is so gratifying and has brought my time at BCLC full circle for me."

Lisa Deschenes, Director of Education and Childcare Services, says, "Pam is always willing to lend a hand, whether it is helping with coverage in a classroom, solving a tuition or food contract issue, or fixing a plumbing problem. She is a trusted member of the Beverly community and we are proud to have her as a member of our administrative team at BCLC."  Keep up the great work, Pam!
